Jesse, David and Solomon — History & Facts
A large seated figure in a green and pink robe dominates the left side of the lunette, his head turned slightly to the right and his gaze directed outward. His right arm rests heavily on his knee, while his left hand holds a draped grey cloth that spills over his lap and down toward the edge of the seat. Behind his shoulder, a smaller figure appears, rendered in brown and partially obscured by the larger figure’s mantle.
To the right, another figure is seated on a block, dressed in a rose-colored robe with a white sleeve and a green belt, leaning forward with his right arm extended. A bright orange cloth is draped over the edge of the seat below him, contrasting with the cooler tones of his clothing and the stone setting. Both figures are placed against a pale, curved architectural backdrop, with the forms of the arch and the window below echoing the semicircular shape of the lunette.
Shadows fall across the figures and the background, creating a sense of depth and emphasizing the three-dimensionality of the seated forms. The color palette shifts from the warm ochres and oranges of the left figure’s clothing to the cooler purples and greys on the right, with subtle transitions visible in the folds and highlights. The brushwork appears smooth and the modeling of the drapery and faces is carefully controlled, with clear contours and areas of light and dark defining the volumes.
The architectural elements are painted with straight lines and geometric precision, framing the central tablet and anchoring the composition. Michelangelo creates a balanced arrangement, with the two main figures seated on either side of the inscribed tablet, their gestures and gazes leading toward the central names. This fresco, titled Jesse, David and Solomon, was painted by Michelangelo between 1511 and 1512.
