L’attente — History & Facts

A large, black-and-white dog sits upright in the foreground, its body turned slightly to the left while its head faces forward, eyes half-closed as if in quiet anticipation. The animal’s thick fur is rendered with soft, textured brushstrokes, especially around the neck and chest, where the white coat catches the warm, golden light that fills the room. Shadow falls gently along the dog’s right side, accentuating the volume of its body and the subtle variations in the creamy, grey, and brown tones of its fur.

Behind the dog, a yellow ochre wall forms a luminous backdrop, its surface marked by visible, almost dry brushwork that gives a tactile sense of the painted ground. The lower part of the wall is painted in a darker, reddish-brown, grounding the animal and suggesting the edge of a shadowed floor. To the left, a staff or pole leans against the wall, its wooden shaft and a hint of red ribbon or fabric providing a vertical accent that breaks the otherwise horizontal composition.

The dog’s tail curls around its haunches, resting on the floor and rendered with feathery strokes that echo the softness of its coat. The animal’s expression is calm and patient, with a closed mouth and slightly drooping eyelids, conveying a sense of waiting or expectation. Light falls from above and slightly to the left, illuminating the dog’s face and chest while casting a gentle shadow behind its body and along the wall.

The composition is intimate, bringing the viewer close to the animal and focusing attention on its presence and character. The artist’s signature appears in the lower right corner, inscribed in delicate script.
