L'été. Champ de coquelicots — History & Facts

A tall tree rises on the left, its foliage painted in thick, textured strokes of green and yellow that catch the sunlight. Beneath the tree, a woman in a pale dress stands holding a white parasol, her figure softly blended into the dappled shade. To her left, two small figures—one seated and one standing—appear in the grass, their forms loosely defined with quick dabs of blue and ochre.

The ground around them is flecked with red and orange, suggesting wild poppies scattered through the summer field. A winding path of earth and grass leads from the foreground into the distance, dividing the painting and drawing the gaze toward the horizon. On the right, the landscape opens into a broad expanse of fields, painted in luminous yellows and greens that shimmer under the afternoon sun.

Above, the sky is a brilliant blue, filled with drifting clouds shaped by loose, swirling brushwork in white, pink, and violet. The composition balances the mass of the tree on the left with the open sweep of land and sky to the right, creating a sense of space and air. Every surface is alive with visible brushstrokes, from the crisp highlights on the tree to the soft haze of distant fields and the thick impasto of wildflowers in the foreground.

A row of dark green trees lines the far left edge of the painting, receding into the distance and partially obscured by the tall tree in the foreground. In the lower right corner, the grass is tinged with purples and browns, where the brushstrokes become especially loose and layered. The sunlight falls brightest on the open fields to the right, illuminating the yellow and green patches and casting a warm glow over the landscape.

Broken, horizontal strokes of paint define the edge of the path and the transition between earth and grass, creating a sense of movement along the ground. L'été. Champ de coquelicots is painted by Claude Monet in 1875.
