Lady Dorothy Percy, Countess of Leicester (1598-1659) — History & Facts
A woman sits upright in a high-backed chair, her body turned slightly to the left while her face looks directly outward. Her right hand rests lightly on the arm of the chair, while her left hand lies relaxed on her lap, the fingers elegantly extended. The sitter’s skin is rendered with smooth, luminous brushwork, contrasting with the crisp folds and subtle sheen of her dress, where the artist’s handling of light and shadow creates a sense of rich texture.
Behind her, a heavy brown drapery sweeps diagonally from the upper left, while to the right a window or painted panel opens onto a landscape with blue sky, white clouds, and leafy trees. The composition balances the solidity of the chair and figure with the softness of the fabrics and the distant view, using a restrained palette of whites, golds, and blues, punctuated by the warm tones of the background and chair. The left edge of the painting is dominated by the sweeping, dark brown drapery, which appears almost velvety and is highlighted by a few golden reflections near the upper corner.
The lower right corner of the canvas shows the hem of the sitter’s gown pooling in soft, silvery folds over the seat of the chair. The light falls from the left, illuminating the sitter’s face, neck, and upper chest, while casting gentle shadows along her right arm and the folds of her dress. The background landscape glimpsed through the window or painted panel features a cluster of dark green trees and a sky with patches of white cloud and pale blue.
The handling of paint in the landscape is looser and more atmospheric compared to the crisp, precise lines used to define the sitter’s fingers and jewelry. The portrait is the work of Anthony van Dyck, painted in England during the seventeenth century. The date of the painting is placed between 1632 and 1641.
