Anthony van Dyck

Flemish, 1599–1641

Anthony van Dyck (1599–1641) was a Flemish artist associated with the Baroque movement. Born in Antwerp as the seventh of twelve children to a prosperous silk merchant, he began painting early and achieved recognition as an independent artist in his teens. Van Dyck became a master in the Guild of Saint Luke in 1617 and worked in the studio of Peter Paul Rubens. After working in the Spanish Netherlands, Italy, and Flanders, he moved to London in 1632, where he served as the main court painter to Charles I, was knighted, and was later buried in St Paul's Cathedral.
