Lady with a Fan — History & Facts
A woman stands turned slightly to her right, gazing directly outward with a composed expression. Her right hand rests lightly at her waist, while her left hand holds a closed fan that hangs by her side. She wears a dress of black and white, with voluminous sleeves that are gathered and decorated with gold lines, and a wide white sash tied in a bow at her waist.
A delicate lace collar frames her neck, and a gold chain drapes across her chest, fastened with a black rosette brooch. The sitter’s hair is parted in the center and falls in soft curls to her shoulders, catching the light against the subdued brown background. The background is plain and unadorned, focusing all attention on the figure and her attire.
Light falls from the left, illuminating her face, the folds of her dress, and the fan, while subtle shadows model her features and the contours of her clothing. The brushwork is smooth in the rendering of her skin and face, while the fabric of her dress shows a more varied texture, with visible highlights and soft transitions between light and shadow. The composition is balanced, with the figure filling most of the canvas and her fan providing a vertical accent at the lower right.
Small details, such as the gold embroidery on her sleeves and the delicate lace at her cuffs, are carefully observed and painted with precision. Lady with a Fan was painted by Anthony van Dyck in 1628. The work is part of the Samuel H. Kress Collection and is associated with the National Gallery of Art.
