George Washington (Lansdowne Portrait) — History & Facts
George Washington (Lansdowne Portrait) is an oil on canvas painting completed by Gilbert Stuart on April 12, 1796. The work was commissioned during the final year of Washington’s presidency and is one of the most celebrated full-length portraits of the first President of the United States. This portrait marks a significant moment in Stuart's career, as it established his reputation as the foremost American portraitist of his era. The painting depicts George Washington standing in a neoclassical interior, dressed in black civilian attire, with his right arm extended in a gesture of address.
Behind him, a red drapery is pulled aside to reveal a column and a glimpse of sky, while a table covered in a rich red cloth holds a quill, inkstand, and papers, symbolizing Washington’s role in governance. The chair behind him is decorated with the United States shield, and books are stacked at his feet, reinforcing themes of leadership and learning. The composition employs a balanced arrangement of light and shadow, with careful attention to the textures of fabric, flesh, and architectural detail. The Lansdowne Portrait was commissioned by Senator William Bingham of Pennsylvania as a gift for British Prime Minister William Petty, 1st Marquess of Lansdowne.
The portrait became widely known through numerous copies and engravings produced by Stuart and his studio, influencing the visual representation of Washington for generations. The original painting is held in a prominent public collection and has been exhibited extensively, serving as an enduring symbol of Washington’s public service and the ideals of the early American republic.
