Martyrdom of Saint Thomas — History & Facts
At the center, a bearded man in a black robe and barefoot is thrown backward, one arm flung upwards, as a muscular figure in a yellow cloth drives a spear into his side. His face is turned toward the sky, mouth open and eyes wide, while his left hand clutches a stone cross planted beside him. To his right, a man in a red cloth pulls back his arm to hurl a large stone, his face twisted in exertion.
Behind the central martyr, another figure raises a dagger high above his head, preparing to strike. Above the tumult, five winged cherubs hover in a burst of light, their bodies rendered in soft, luminous flesh tones. A dramatic shaft of light falls from the upper left, illuminating the martyr and the cherubs, while the attackers remain in partial shadow.
In the background, a domed building with spiral columns and golden capitals rises behind the figures, its architecture evoking classical forms. To the left of the building, palm trees with clusters of dark fruit reach into the sky, their fronds framing the heavenly figures above. Beneath the martyr’s feet, the stone steps and ground are rendered with swift, textured brushwork, contrasting with the smooth, glowing skin of the figures.
The composition is packed with movement and tension, the figures’ muscular bodies twisting and overlapping in a tight, vertical arrangement. The background at the upper right edge fades into swirling, stormy clouds that partially obscure the golden dome and columns. The cherubs are surrounded by wispy, blue-gray clouds that blend softly into the sky, with their pink skin contrasting against the cool tones.
The paint handling is especially loose and energetic in the depiction of the ground and the folds of the attackers’ garments, where quick, visible brushstrokes create a sense of movement and texture. The painting now belongs to the National Gallery Prague.
