Nave Nave Mahana — History & Facts

A group of seven figures stands and sits among slender trees, their bodies arranged across a glowing red ground. At the center, three women stand in a loose row, each with a distinct gesture: one holds a hand to her mouth, another faces away in a pale dress, and the third stands in profile with hands at her waist, her dress patterned with white flowers. To the right, a topless woman in a reddish wrap holds a shallow bowl aloft in her left hand, her gaze directed outward and her right arm bent across her body.

Behind her, another woman with long hair and a garland looks toward the group, her purple dress blending with the shadows of the trees. On the far right, a seated figure in blue shorts leans back, one arm resting on a bent knee, partly obscured by a tree trunk and large white flowers in the foreground. Near her, a small figure in dark clothing crouches close to the earth, holding something to their mouth.

The ground is painted in vivid red and orange tones, dotted with scattered stones and patches of shadow. Delicate white flowers bloom on low plants in the foreground, their pale color contrasting with the warm earth. The trees rise in dark, vertical lines, their branches creating a loose canopy that frames the group and breaks up the background.

Beyond the trees, the landscape opens to a band of yellow, suggesting a luminous sky at either sunrise or sunset. The brushwork is broad and matte, with areas of flat color and visible outlines giving the composition a decorative, almost tapestry-like effect. The title Nave Nave Mahana appears in the lower right, inscribed along with the artist's name and the date 1896.
