Portrait of Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin — History & Facts
Portrait of Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin is an oil on canvas painted by Ivan Kramskoi in 1879. The work depicts the Russian writer Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin (1826–1889) and was executed on commission from Pavel Tretyakov, the founder of the Tretyakov Gallery. This portrait belongs to a significant period in Kramskoi's career, when he was producing likenesses of prominent Russian cultural figures for Tretyakov’s celebrated collection. The composition presents Saltykov-Shchedrin seated against a muted, textured background, his body turned slightly to the side, with his hands folded in his lap.
The sitter’s face is rendered with great attention to detail, emphasizing his intense gaze and long, graying beard. The lighting is soft and even, bringing out the natural tones of the skin and the subtle highlights in the hair and beard. The restrained palette and the sober clothing focus attention on the psychological presence of the sitter, a hallmark of Kramskoi's portraiture. The painting was commissioned by Pavel Tretyakov specifically for his gallery, which sought to assemble portraits of notable Russian writers, artists, and public figures.
Today, the work is held in the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. An authorial repetition of this portrait exists in the museum of the Institute of Russian Literature. The portrait is recognized as a key example of late 19th-century Russian realist portraiture and has been widely exhibited as part of the gallery’s permanent collection.
