Portrait of Venetia, Lady Digby — History & Facts
Venetia Stanley stands at the centre of the composition, her gaze directed calmly outward as she is crowned with a laurel wreath by two winged cherubs in the sky above. Her figure is draped in luxurious fabrics, with a shimmering rose-pink mantle cascading over her arm and a deep green garment beneath, rendered with sweeping, fluid brushstrokes that catch the light. A delicate string of pearls encircles her neck, and her pale skin is softly illuminated against the darker, stormy landscape that stretches into the distance at left.
To her right, she rests her hand on a sculpted urn, its surface painted with silvery highlights that suggest polished stone or metal. At her feet, a sleeping cherub lies on the ground, while a muscular, shadowed male figure crouches nearby, his arms crossed over his knees and his head turned away. The background is filled with dramatic clouds and a patch of blue sky, while a leafy tree rises at the left edge, its branches painted with quick, textured strokes.
Three cherubs hover above, their plump bodies and fluttering drapery painted with soft, luminous flesh tones and airy blue-grey wings. The composition is carefully balanced, with Venetia’s upright pose and the diagonal sweep of her mantle echoed by the angles of the clouds and the figures around her. A thick, curling vine with green leaves grows up along the stone ledge at the right edge of the painting.
The muscular male figure at lower left is partially shrouded in shadow, with his bare back and arms rendered in broad, dark brushstrokes. The clouds behind the main figure are painted with swirling, textured strokes of white, grey, and ochre, creating a sense of movement in the sky. Light falls most strongly on Venetia’s face, chest, and the folds of her rose-pink mantle, leaving the lower corners and background in deeper shadow.
In the upper right corner, a blue drapery billows behind one of the flying cherubs, its edges sharply outlined against the dark clouds. The work is a portrait of Venetia Stanley, as identified in the title and subject fields.
