Serravalle Altarpiece — History & Facts

A woman in a deep blue mantle and red gown sits on a bank of clouds, holding a young child on her lap. The child, unclothed, leans forward and raises one arm, his gaze turned downward. Surrounding them, several angels cluster at the edges of the cloud, some with wings and flowing garments, their faces turned toward the central pair.

The background above is filled with warm golden light, which creates a glowing atmosphere around the woman and child. Below the cloud, two bearded men stand on either side: one on the left holds a large wooden cross and wears a red drape over an olive robe, while the other on the right, dressed in a reddish mantle over white, holds a thick book and raises a scroll toward the figures above. A group of small figures is visible in the distant landscape at the bottom, near a shoreline and a boat with a billowing sail.

The artist’s name, 'TITIAN,' is inscribed on a broken stone at the lower center foreground. Soft, blended brushwork defines the faces and drapery, while the clouds and sky are rendered with smooth transitions of color and light. The composition is vertically arranged, with the woman and child elevated above the saints, who stand solidly on the ground below.

The color scheme contrasts the luminous golds and pinks of the upper scene with the deeper reds and earth tones of the lower figures. Titian is the creator of the Serravalle Altarpiece, dated to the 1540s. The work is recognized as religious art and belongs to the Venetian school. Figures depicted include Mary, a woman, the Christ Child, a boy, a mother, Andrew the Apostle, and Saint Peter.
