The Consignment of the Regency — History & Facts
A richly dressed woman stands at the center, her hand extended to receive a scepter from a bearded man in armor, while a young boy in a red suit looks up at her between them. The scene unfolds beneath an elaborate stone archway, with a balustrade and classical columns framing the figures, and a distant landscape glimpsed through an arched opening at the back. To the left, a group of soldiers in ornate armor cluster together, one holding a tall flag adorned with blue and gold fleur-de-lis, while spears and halberds rise behind them.
At the right, two women stand close to the central figure, one in a golden robe with bare feet resting on a stone step, and the other in a blue gown, her hair pinned up, both watching the ceremonial gesture. A small dog sits at the feet of the women, its head turned upward as if attentive to the event. Light streams from the left, illuminating the faces and rich fabrics, picking out the sheen of the metallic armor and the intricate patterns of lace and embroidery.
The color scheme is dominated by deep reds, golds, and blues, with white highlights in the ruffs and sashes, and the stonework rendered in cool greys and warm ochres. Brushwork is fluid and energetic, especially in the folds of the costumes and the textures of hair and fur, while architectural details are crisply defined. Each face is individualized, with the central woman calm and dignified, the man earnest, and the boy eager, while the surrounding figures display attentive or solemn expressions.
Above, the balustrade and sky open the space, suggesting grandeur and ceremony within a palatial setting. The Consignment of the Regency was painted by Peter Paul Rubens in the early 1620s, with the date placed around 1622 to 1625.
