The Countess of Casa Flores — History & Facts
A woman with dark, voluminous curls sits in three-quarter view against a muted brown background, her gaze directed outward with a calm, reserved expression. She wears a loose, white dress with a pale pink sash just below the bust, the fabric rendered with soft, flowing brushstrokes that suggest its lightness and transparency. Her right arm rests gently on her lap, while her left hand is placed on a cushion beside her, the fingers relaxed and natural.
Behind her, a pile of cushions in subdued tones of ochre, blue, and brown adds depth and a subtle touch of color to the otherwise restrained setting. The background is plain and softly blended, focusing all attention on the sitter without distraction. Light falls from the left, illuminating her face and the folds of her dress, while subtle shadows model her features and arms, giving a sense of volume and presence.
The brushwork is delicate, especially in the rendering of the dress and skin, where fine transitions of tone create a lifelike effect. The composition is balanced, with the sitter placed slightly off-center and her figure filling much of the canvas, creating an intimate encounter with the viewer. Small details, such as the pink trim on her sleeves and the careful depiction of her hands, reveal the artist’s attention to character and individuality.
A dark blue cushion is visible at the lower right edge, partly hidden behind the sitter’s arm and dress. The lower left corner of the painting shows the hem of the dress softly blending into the shadowed background, with loose, sketch-like brushwork. The background transitions from a deeper brown at the top to a lighter, warmer tone near the bottom, subtly framing the figure.
The light creates a gentle highlight along the sitter’s left shoulder and the upper folds of her sleeve, while her right side and the cushions behind her are cast in deeper shadow. This portrait, titled The Countess of Casa Flores, was created by Francisco de Goya in the 1790s. The São Paulo Museum of Art lists the date of the painting as between 1790 and 1797.
