The Fall of an Avalanche in the Grisons — History & Facts

A massive, jagged boulder dominates the right foreground, its angular form thrust upwards from a slope scattered with rocks and dark green trees. At the base of the boulder, a small brown structure appears partly obscured by debris, nestled among the trees and rocks. A cluster of coniferous trees rises from the lower center, their pointed tops silhouetted against the pale mountainside.

Behind this tumult of earth and stone, a steep, snow-covered mountainside fills the middle and right background, its surface marked by swirling, energetic brushstrokes that suggest movement and disruption. Near the upper right, another large rock seems suspended in the air, echoing the sense of sudden upheaval. The sky is a turbulent expanse of grey and blue, with lighter streaks and a faint warm glow at the horizon on the left, contrasting with the cool, shadowed slopes below.

The paint is applied in bold, sweeping strokes, especially in the depiction of clouds and snow, creating a textured, dynamic surface. Earthy browns and deep greens anchor the lower half of the composition, while icy whites and cool greys dominate the upper sections, sharpening the contrast between land and sky. The composition is dramatically tilted, with the diagonal thrust of the boulder and the sweep of the avalanche drawing the viewer's gaze upward and across the canvas.

Tiny flecks of lighter paint on the rocks and trees add highlights that catch the light and emphasize the roughness of the terrain. In the lower left corner, several angular rocks jut diagonally upward, partially shadowed and overlapping the dark green foliage. A narrow band of warm ochre light appears along the horizon at the far left, softly illuminating the edge of the distant mountains.

The upper left corner of the canvas is densely layered with cool grey and blue brushstrokes, creating a sense of heavy, swirling cloud cover. Delicate, thin lines of white paint streak across the sky and snow, suggesting wind or fine mist moving through the scene. The Fall of an Avalanche in the Grisons is created by J. M.

W. Turner in 1810.
