The Seine at Bougival — History & Facts

A wide river curves through the center of the scene, its surface reflecting streaks of pink, yellow, and blue from the sky above. To the left, a small rowboat with two figures glides across the water, their dark silhouettes sharply outlined against the luminous reflections. Beyond the river, a row of white and pale houses lines the far bank, their forms softened by the distance and the fading light.

A dense cluster of trees and shrubs dominates the right foreground, painted with thick, rapid strokes of deep green and shadowy brown. The sky occupies more than half of the composition, filled with swirling clouds in tones of grey, orange, and lavender, capturing the fleeting effects of sunset. Brushstrokes remain visible throughout, especially in the sky and water, where broad, loose marks evoke the movement of clouds and ripples.

The horizon is low, allowing the dramatic sky to command attention, while the dark mass of trees on the right anchors the composition. Small details, such as the upright poles along the riverbank and the subtle reflections in the water, add depth and texture to the scene. The palette shifts from the cool blues and greys of the sky to the warm golds and greens of the land, creating a sense of atmosphere and time of day.

In the lower right corner, blades of grass and reeds emerge from the water’s edge, painted in short, textured strokes of green and brown. The far background features a line of softly rendered trees silhouetted against the glowing sky, their forms blending into the dark horizon. Along the left edge, the riverbank is dotted with small, indistinct posts and patches of reflected light.

The brightest area of the composition is near the center, where the sunset’s golden tones illuminate the water and the lower clouds, contrasting with the shadowy greens and blues at the edges. The Seine at Bougival was painted by Claude Monet in 1869.
