The Two Majesties (Les Deux Majestés) — History & Facts
A huge, solitary lion sits on a rocky outcrop and gazes across the desert at the setting sun. The title pairs the two “majesties”: the lion, king of the beasts, and the majestic sun itself. Jean-Léon Gérôme builds the scene's eerie grandeur from a single vertical, the lion's profile, set against the flat horizontal bands of the desert. He painted it in 1883. In a visitors' vote whose results the Milwaukee Art Museum published for its 125th anniversary in 2013, it came third among 186 works in the collection.
It is in the Milwaukee Art Museum.
