The United States in North America and the Russian Empire in Europe (Kawaraban Broadsheet) — History & Facts
The United States in North America and the Russian Empire in Europe (Kawaraban Broadsheet) depicts two uniformed figures standing side by side, rendered in black ink on paper. The figure on the left wears a tall, feathered hat and carries a rifle, while the figure on the right is dressed in a double-breasted coat with epaulets, a bicorne hat, and holds a sword. Both figures are surrounded by vertical columns of Japanese text, which describe their identities and possibly provide commentary or information about their respective countries. This broadsheet is an example of a kawaraban, a type of Japanese woodblock-printed news sheet that circulated during the late Edo period.
Produced circa 1855, this work reflects Japanese interest in foreign nations during a time of increasing contact with the outside world. The broadsheet format, with its combination of image and explanatory text, was commonly used to inform the public about international events, foreign customs, and military matters. The work is held in a public collection and is accessible through the Rare Maps website.
