View From Montmartre (Vue de Montmartre) — History & Facts

A cluster of green trees and shrubs fills the foreground, their foliage rendered in lively strokes of emerald, yellow, and blue. Above this dense greenery, several buildings with ochre and terracotta walls rise, their flat roofs and simple facades catching the diffused daylight. The structures are loosely defined, with brushwork that blurs their edges into the surrounding vegetation, giving the impression of a hillside neighborhood.

To the left, a house with a red-tiled roof sits partly obscured by trees, while to the right, a white building with red trim stands out against the mass of green. Beyond these houses, the city stretches into the distance, its forms dissolving into a haze of pale blues, purples, and soft pinks that suggest a sprawling urban landscape under a vast sky. The sky dominates the upper half of the composition, filled with swirling, luminous clouds painted in broad, energetic strokes of white, gray, and hints of blue.

Light falls evenly across the scene, with no sharp shadows, creating a gentle, atmospheric effect that softens the outlines of both buildings and vegetation. The composition is balanced by the diagonal sweep of the hillside, which leads the gaze from the lower left corner upward and across the cityscape. The brushwork is loose and vibrant, typical of the Impressionist style, with visible dabs and streaks that capture the fleeting quality of light and air.

Touches of warm ochre, rose, and green intermingle throughout, unifying the scene with a harmonious palette. In the lower right corner, the artist’s signature appears in orange paint.
