Władysław Jagiełło and Vytautas praying before the battle of Grunwald — History & Facts
On July 15, 1410, two cousins—Władysław Jagiełło, King of Poland, and Vytautas the Great, Grand Duke of Lithuania—stood side by side before the largest medieval battle ever fought in Europe: the Battle of Grunwald. This clash would break the power of the Teutonic Knights and shift the balance of power in Eastern Europe for centuries. When Jan Matejko chose this subject in 1855, he was only seventeen, yet already drawn to the grand dramas of Polish history that would define his career.
The painting captures not the fury of combat, but the tense, solemn moment before history’s tide turned—a rare focus for a battle scene. In Władysław Jagiełło and Vytautas praying before the battle of Grunwald, the two rulers kneel in prayer, their armor glinting in the uncertain dawn. Jagiełło’s hands are clasped tightly, his gaze lifted, while Vytautas bows his head, a sword laid before him—a gesture of humility and hope. Behind them, banners flutter and the shadowed ranks of soldiers wait, their faces anxious and resolute.
Matejko’s use of light isolates the cousins in a pool of gold, suggesting divine favor or the weight of destiny. Unlike Albrecht Dürer’s more chaotic depictions of battle, Matejko’s scene is hushed and focused, making the act of prayer as momentous as the clash to come. The early date of this work places it at the very beginning of Matejko’s career, years before his monumental Battle of Grunwald of 1878 would cement his reputation. The medium of this 1855 painting is not well documented, and its current location remains uncertain; it is rarely reproduced and may reside in a private collection or be lost.
Nevertheless, the choice of subject reveals Matejko’s lifelong fascination with moments of national crisis and unity. While his later canvases would become icons of Polish identity, this early work already shows the artist’s instinct for narrative and symbolism, offering a glimpse into the formation of a painter who would become the great chronicler of Polish history.
