Czech, 1860–1939

Alphonse Mucha (24 July 1860 – 14 July 1939) was a Czech painter, illustrator, and graphic artist. He gained wide recognition in Paris during the Art Nouveau period for his stylized and decorative theatrical posters, especially those featuring Sarah Bernhardt, as well as for his illustrations, advertisements, and decorative panels. Later in life, he returned to his homeland and created The Slav Epic, a series of twenty large symbolist paintings depicting the history of Slavic peoples, which he completed between 1912 and 1926 and presented to the Czech nation in 1928. Mucha was born in Ivančice, Moravia, showed early artistic and musical talent, and grew up in a family of modest means.
