French, 1864–1901
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864–1901) was a French painter, printmaker, draughtsman, caricaturist, and illustrator. Born into an aristocratic family in Albi, he experienced health problems after breaking both legs in adolescence, resulting in a stunted appearance. He became immersed in the vibrant and theatrical life of late 19th-century Paris, often depicting brothels and the bohemian lifestyle in his art. Toulouse-Lautrec was associated with the Post-Impressionist movement.
