Johan Thomas Lundbye

Danish, 1818–1848

Johan Thomas Lundbye was a Danish painter known for his romantic landscapes and depictions of rural life. He is considered one of the prominent figures in Danish art during the 19th century. Lundbye was born on March 24, 1818, in the town of Hillerød, Denmark. He studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, where he developed his skills in landscape painting. Lundbye's career was relatively short, as he died at the young age of 29 on May 24, 1848, in the First Schleswig War. His works often reflect a deep appreciation for nature and the Danish countryside, characterized by a romantic and idealized style. Major works include 'The Old Oak' and 'The Harvesters.' Lundbye's significance lies in his ability to capture the essence of Danish landscapes, influencing subsequent generations of artists in Denmark.
