Robert Henri

American, 1865–1929

Robert Henri (1865–1929) was an American painter and teacher who studied in Paris as a young man and was influenced by Impressionism. He led a group that established the Ashcan School of American realism, focusing on urban life in a direct and uncompromising style. Henri recognized the impact of new movements like Cubism by 1913 but continued to support avant-garde artists. In 1929, the Arts Council of New York named him among the top three living American artists.
