A Miller — History & Facts
An elderly man with a grey beard and a tall, worn hat is depicted in profile against a plain, muted background in this 1873 oil painting by Ivan Kramskoi. The sitter wears a simple, loose shirt, and his weathered face and contemplative expression are rendered with careful attention to texture and natural light. The palette is restrained, dominated by earthy browns and ochres, with subtle gradations that emphasize the subject’s features and the rough fabric of his clothing. Painted in Russia in the third quarter of the nineteenth century, this work reflects the period’s growing interest in the lives and character of rural people.
Kramskoi was known for his focus on peasant subjects, and this painting is among the early examples of his efforts to create representative images of Russian peasants. The canvas measures 73.5 by 58 centimeters and is held in the Russian Museum.
