A View of Het Steen in the Early Morning — History & Facts

A broad sweep of countryside stretches into the distance beneath a sky streaked with bands of cloud, its light catching the fields and watercourses below. On the left, partly hidden among tall trees, stands a stone castle with turrets and arched windows, its façade catching the early morning light. A narrow path runs diagonally from the lower left, where a horse-drawn cart moves uphill, the horses’ heads bowed and their harnesses detailed in ochre and brown.

Two figures ride in the cart, while a man in the foreground crouches low, accompanied by a dog, his attention focused on the undergrowth. The ground is uneven and tangled with roots and brambles, painted with energetic, textured brushstrokes that suggest the roughness of the terrain. To the right, a small stream or ford glimmers in the sunlight, its banks edged with tufts of grass and wildflowers.

Further into the middle ground, the landscape opens into a patchwork of fields, dotted with cattle and tiny figures tending to the land. A line of trees recedes toward the horizon, their foliage rendered in greens and golds that evoke the turning of the season. Above, the sky dominates the composition, filled with swirling clouds and a subtle play of blue, grey, and pale yellow, with birds flying high over the fields.

Close observation reveals the painter’s varied technique: loose, expressive brushwork in the foliage and foreground, finer detail in the figures and animals, and smooth transitions in the sky. In the lower right corner, a tangle of reddish-brown branches and dry grasses fills the foreground, painted with swift, looping strokes that contrast with the smoother fields beyond. A cluster of birds is visible in the sky just above the horizon, their wings catching the light as they fly in a loose formation over the distant fields.

The far left edge of the painting is shadowed by dense foliage, with the trunks of several trees rendered in dark, vertical lines that frame the castle and path. Light falls most strongly on the open fields at the center and right, where patches of yellow-green and soft gold suggest the freshness of early morning dew.
