Adoration of the Magi of ca. 1470- — History & Facts
A crowd gathers beneath the ruins of a grand classical building, where figures in vivid robes cluster around a central group. At the heart of the scene, a woman in blue and red sits with a child on her lap, surrounded by men in ornate garments who kneel or bow before her. Several figures in the foreground wear rich colors—deep blues, reds, and golds—while others stand or kneel behind them, some turning to look at one another or gesturing towards the central group.
To the right, horses with elaborate trappings are attended by grooms and onlookers, their bodies painted with careful attention to musculature and sheen. On the far left, more figures cluster around a stone parapet, some turning their heads to speak, others gazing towards the central mother and child. Above the crowd, the ruined architecture frames the sky, with broken columns, archways, and a wooden roof structure casting angular shadows across the stone steps.
Several figures in the lower right corner hold golden vessels and gifts, their hands extended forward. A man in a blue tunic and red stockings stands with his back to the viewer near the bottom center, facing the central group. The background landscape reveals rolling green hills dotted with buildings and trees beneath a pale blue sky streaked with grey clouds.
Light falls most strongly on the central figures and the architectural ruins, leaving the edges and corners in deeper shadow. Distinct, fine brushstrokes define the folds of garments and the textures of hair and fur throughout the crowd. Delicate linear details are visible in the masonry and wooden beams of the ruined building, emphasizing the structure’s decay. This work, titled Adoration of the Magi of ca.
1470-1475, was created by Sandro Botticelli in the 1470s.
