Sandro Botticelli

Italian, 1445–1510

Sandro Botticelli (c. 1445 – 1510), born Alessandro di Mariano di Vanni Filipepi, was an Italian painter associated with the Early Renaissance. He spent nearly his entire life in Florence, except for periods working in Pisa and Rome. Botticelli was known for mythological and religious paintings, including many images of the Madonna and Child, and received support from the Medici family. His most famous works, such as The Birth of Venus and Primavera, are in Florence, and his style evolved from the linear grace of late Italian Gothic and Early Renaissance to a more personal and mannered approach in his later years.
