The Trinity with Saint Mary Magdalene and Saint John the Baptist, the Archangel Raphael and Tobias — History & Facts

At the centre of the composition, Christ hangs on the cross, his head bowed and his body illuminated against a pale blue sky framed by two rocky outcrops. Above him, God the Father supports the cross with both hands, surrounded by a cluster of cherubic faces, while a white dove, symbolising the Holy Spirit, hovers just above Christ’s head within a glowing mandorla. To the left, Mary Magdalene stands barefoot on the rocky ground, her long, flowing hair cascading over her shoulders, hands raised in a gesture of intense prayer and devotion.

The lower part of the painting features two much smaller figures: the Archangel Raphael, dressed in red and gold, leads the young Tobias, who carries a fish under his arm as they walk together across the foreground, their attention turned away from the main scene above. The background is a serene blue, with the rocky landscape opening up to a distant sky, while the ground beneath the main figures is rendered in earthy tones with sparse vegetation. The brushwork is fine and precise, especially in the delicate rendering of faces and hair, while the drapery of the garments is modelled with subtle gradations of light and shadow, giving a sense of volume and texture.

The composition is carefully balanced, with the vertical axis of the cross anchoring the scene and the figures of Mary Magdalene and John the Baptist forming a symmetrical arrangement on either side. Bright reds and deep blacks dominate the drapery, contrasting with the pale flesh tones and the luminous blue of the sky.
