Adoring Angel, Looking Left — History & Facts
This small panel, 38.7 × 20.3 cm, shows an angel in adoration, painted by Fra Angelico in tempera on a gold ground in the first half of the 1400s. According to the Louvre, it was apparently the right-hand part of a ciborium, a tabernacle for the Eucharist, whose center, with six angels around Christ blessing, is now in the Hermitage in St. Petersburg.
Its companion angel is also in the Louvre. The angel is caught in a moment of rapt attention. The soft modeling of the face, the feathery curls and the subtle play of light across the cheek show Fra Angelico's careful observation of the world, while the gold ground sets the figure apart from earthly space. The Société des Amis du Louvre bought the panel from the descendants of the collector Th. de La Noue and gave it to the Louvre in 2002.
