Lunette of the east wall in Niccoline Chapel — History & Facts

A golden-haloed figure in a rich yellow robe stands at the center, framed by an imposing architectural archway and flanked by groups of men in flowing garments. The left side of the lunette shows figures gesturing urgently toward the central saint, their faces marked by tension and their hands outstretched, some gripping his arm or pointing forward. Behind them, a walled city rises in pale stone, its towers and battlements receding into a softly lit, mountainous landscape under a sky that shifts from blue to gold.

The composition is divided by a tall, cylindrical column that marks the transition from the city’s structured order to the open, rolling hills dotted with cypress trees and a distant cluster of red buildings. The fresco’s surface reveals delicate modeling in the faces and drapery, with subtle gradations of light and shadow giving volume to the figures and architecture. On the far left, a bearded man in an orange robe holds a sword at his side, his gaze directed toward the central figure.

The lower right corner features a patch of rocky earth with sparse vegetation, contrasting with the smoother, golden-brown ground beneath the figures’ feet. A group of cypress trees stands in dark silhouette near the right edge, their vertical forms echoing the architectural columns on the left. Light falls most strongly on the central figure’s face and robe, casting soft shadows on the ground and creating a gentle highlight along the architectural arch.

Fine, linear brushstrokes define the folds in the garments and the outlines of the distant hills, lending a crisp clarity to the landscape and figures. The deep blue of the vaulted ceiling above is studded with gold stars, framing the narrative scene below with a celestial canopy.
