Crucifixion with the Virgin, John the Evangelist, and Mary Magdelene — History & Facts
A pale figure of Christ hangs on the cross at the center, his head bowed and eyes closed, with blood flowing from his wounds at the hands, feet, and side. Two angels hover in the golden sky, one on each side of Christ, their hands raised in gestures of mourning as they look toward the crucified figure. Below, three figures stand and kneel at the foot of the cross: to the left, the Virgin Mary in a deep blue mantle lifts her right hand, her face turned in sorrow toward her son.
Fine, delicate brushwork defines the faces, hair, and garments, while the folds of the drapery are modeled with subtle gradations of color and highlighted with gold accents. The composition is tightly focused, with all figures arranged in a vertical axis beneath the cross, their gestures and gazes converging on Christ. Small details, such as the halos incised with fine lines and the intricate pattern of the Virgin's robe border, reveal the artist's attention to ornament and spiritual symbolism.
The background is a continuous field of gold leaf, with visible cracks and irregularities that give a textured, aged appearance to the surface. The upper corners of the arched panel are empty except for the gold ground, which curves smoothly to frame the scene. Light falls evenly across the figures, illuminating the folds of their garments and casting no strong shadows, which flattens the sense of depth.
The kneeling figure at the foot of the cross has long, flowing golden hair that cascades down her back and over her shoulder, rendered with fine, wavy lines. The standing male figure to the right wears a robe of soft pink with subtle highlights and shadows, and a dark blue garment visible at his feet. Fine incised lines outline the halos around each figure's head, and the edges of the garments are delicately traced with gold to catch the light.
