Dormition and Assumption of the Virgin — History & Facts

A golden architectural frame encloses two distinct yet connected scenes, each crowded with figures and shimmering with gilded backgrounds. At the top, the Virgin Mary rises at the center, her robe a luminous blue scattered with golden stars, surrounded by a host of angels in vibrant robes of pink, green, blue, and red, each with a golden halo. The angels cluster in groups, some kneeling in adoration, others playing musical instruments, their faces turned toward the Virgin in gestures of reverence and celebration.

The gold ground is intricately tooled, catching the light and creating a sense of divine radiance that envelops the entire heavenly assembly. Below, the earthly scene unfolds with the body of the Virgin lying on a richly patterned bier, her form draped in blue, surrounded by apostles who gather in a semi-circle. Each apostle is distinct, with expressive faces and varied gestures: some clasp their hands in prayer, others lean forward in grief or devotion, and two figures at either end hold tall candlesticks. The apostles' robes are painted in clear, saturated colors—red, blue, green, and violet—contrasting with the golden cloth of the bier and the luminous haloes that crown each head.

Fine brushwork defines the folds of fabric, the delicate features, and the intricate gold patterns on the garments and background, while the overall arrangement leads the gaze upward from the earthly vigil to the celestial celebration above. The composition is carefully balanced: the lower register is dense with mourners, while the upper register opens into a radiant, ascending space filled with music and light. The gold leaf is applied with precision, its surface tooled with tiny patterns that add texture and catch the light at different angles.
