Composition with Yellow, Blue, Black and Light Blue — History & Facts
A luminous yellow square sits in the upper left, bordered on its lower and right sides by thick, straight black lines. Directly beneath the yellow, a white rectangle fills the left edge, its surface showing faint horizontal brushstrokes. A deep blue square anchors the bottom left corner, sharply framed by black lines on its top and right sides.
The largest area of the composition is a pale, cool-toned field occupying the upper right and center, separated from the colored blocks by black vertical and horizontal lines. Thin white strips run along the top and right edges, visible between the color fields and the edge of the canvas. The lower right quadrant is filled by a white rectangle, its surface marked by subtle variations in texture and gentle brushwork.
All the colored and white areas are sharply divided by black lines of varying thickness, forming a strict grid that organizes the entire surface. The paint is applied smoothly, with only occasional hints of the artist’s hand in the brushwork, especially visible in the lighter zones. No representational objects or figures appear; the entire image is constructed from rectangles and squares of color and line.
The black lines intersect at right angles, forming a grid with crisp, clean edges that contrast against the softer brushwork of the color fields. In the lower right corner, the black paint appears slightly textured and cracked, revealing subtle variations in the surface. The yellow square in the upper left has a slightly uneven surface with visible brush marks near its upper edge.
The thin white strip along the right edge is interrupted by a narrow vertical black line near the bottom corner. The blue square in the lower left corner has a crisp, clean edge along the bottom, but a faint unevenness where it meets the black line above. In the large pale area, faint vertical scratches and subtle tonal shifts are visible, especially toward the center and upper right.
The black lines vary in glossiness, with some sections catching more light and appearing shinier than others. Composition with Yellow, Blue, Black and Light Blue is created by Piet Mondrian in 1929.
