Floréal — History & Facts
A procession of figures emerges from a woodland haze, their bodies bathed in a gentle, filtered light that seems to belong to another world. At the center, a woman strides forward with the calm assurance of myth, her gaze direct, a child perched on her hip and another at her side—each crowned and garlanded with spring flowers. Around them, a ring of dancers, half-seen in the dappled shadows, lift their arms in a ritual of celebration, their forms dissolving into the foliage.
The artist punctuates the muted greens and browns with sudden bursts of red from the poppies, drawing the eye to the living, breathing presence of the figures and their offerings to the season. The composition leads us from the dense, mysterious background to the open, sunlit foreground, as if inviting us to step into the world of Floréal ourselves. Created in 1921 by Théophile Alexandre Steinlen, this work belongs to a period when allegory and myth were often used to express renewal and hope in the aftermath of war. The title itself refers to the month of flowers in the French Revolutionary calendar, a nod to both rebirth and the cyclical power of nature.
Such images, rich in symbolism—mothers, children, and flowers—were cherished by collectors like Ernest de Crauzat, whose tastes reflected a longing for innocence and regeneration in uncertain times. History has kept few traces of this particular piece, yet its spirit endures: a vision of spring as both memory and promise, forever returning in art.
