Joséphine-Éléonore-Marie-Pauline de Galard de Brassac de Béarn (1825–1860), Princesse de Broglie — History & Facts
A woman sits poised on a blue upholstered settee, her body turned slightly to the right while her head faces forward, meeting the viewer’s gaze with a reserved and contemplative expression. Her dress is a luminous blue satin, its voluminous skirt and off-the-shoulder bodice trimmed with delicate white lace that reveals the artist’s meticulous attention to texture and detail. The sleeves end in transparent lace ruffles, and a gold chain with a large oval pendant rests at her throat, echoing the gold and pearl bracelets and rings that adorn both wrists and her left hand.
Her right arm is bent, resting lightly on her lap, while her left arm leans on a yellow brocade armchair, over which a white shawl edged with gold embroidery is draped, its folds rendered with crisp precision. A pair of white gloves and a black fan lie on the armchair, their textures contrasting with the smooth sheen of her dress and the plush upholstery. Her dark hair is parted in the center and styled in a smooth, symmetrical fashion, held by blue ribbons and a sheer veil that falls behind her shoulders.
Light falls softly from the left, illuminating her face and the folds of her dress, creating subtle shadows that model her features and accentuate the sculptural quality of her form. The paint surface is smooth and highly finished, with barely visible brushstrokes, typical of the precise handling associated with Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres painted this portrait between 1851 and 1853, and signed and dated it in 1853.
