French, 1780–1867
Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres (1780–1867) was a French painter associated with the Neoclassical movement. Born in Montauban to a family involved in the arts, he received early instruction in drawing and music from his father. Ingres studied in Paris and began exhibiting in 1802, later winning the Prix de Rome. Although he aimed to paint history scenes, his portraits became his most recognized works, and his style influenced later modern artists.
