Meadows at Giverny — History & Facts
When Claude Monet settled in Giverny in 1883, he began a relationship with the local landscape that would define the last decades of his career. Meadows at Giverny, painted in 1888, stands among the earliest works where Monet turned his attention away from water lilies and gardens to the open fields surrounding his new home. This painting is one of several from that summer in which Monet explored the changing effects of light on the wild meadows, a subject that fascinated him for its unpredictability.
The precise location depicted can still be traced near Monet's house, where the meadows roll gently toward the Epte River. In Meadows at Giverny, Monet captures a fleeting moment in late spring or early summer, when the grasses and wildflowers are at their fullest. The eye is drawn across a tapestry of green and yellow, punctuated by dabs of white and purple that suggest daisies and poppies swaying in the breeze. There are no figures, only nature, rendered with quick, broken brushstrokes that dissolve edges and emphasize movement.
The sky, a pale, almost washed-out blue, hints at the humidity of the season and the softness of the light. Unlike the more structured landscapes of Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Monet’s approach is looser, prioritizing sensation over detail—a hallmark of Impressionism. The exact early history of Meadows at Giverny remains unclear, as Monet often painted these scenes for his own pleasure or for sale through his dealer, Paul Durand-Ruel. Over the years, works from this series have been dispersed in private and public collections worldwide, sometimes under varying titles.
Today, Meadows at Giverny is recognized as a pivotal piece in Monet’s exploration of serial landscape painting, foreshadowing the obsessive studies of haystacks and poplars that would soon follow. Its current location is not widely publicized, but it stands as a testament to Monet’s lifelong pursuit: to capture not just a place, but a moment’s light.
