Minerva Protects Pax from Mars — History & Facts
A nude female figure sits at the centre, her body turned slightly to the left and her gaze lowered, surrounded by a dynamic assembly of mythological characters. To her right, a helmeted woman in armour thrusts a shield forward, interposing herself between the central figure and a bearded man who looms at the far right, his muscular arm raised and his red cloak swirling behind him. The armoured woman’s gesture is forceful, her face tense with determination as she confronts the bearded man, whose own expression is fierce and intent.
Behind the central group, a winged putto hovers in the air, holding a torch aloft, while another small child stands at the woman’s knee, clutching a bunch of grapes and looking outward. To the left, a satyr kneels, offering a cornucopia overflowing with fruit to the seated woman, while a leopard skin lies draped across his legs. Two women stand behind the satyr, one holding a golden vessel and the other raising a tambourine, both turning their attention toward the central scene.
On the right, three children cluster together, their faces bright and curious, as a richly dressed woman in a golden gown bends protectively over them. The background is filled with swirling clouds and a dramatic sky, with shafts of light breaking through and illuminating the figures, especially the central nude and the armoured woman. The composition is crowded and energetic, with bodies overlapping and gestures interlocking, creating a sense of urgent movement and tension.
Warm, golden tones dominate the scene, from the flesh of the figures to the draperies and fruit, while deep reds and dark shadows add drama and contrast. The brushwork is fluid and expressive, with visible strokes shaping the contours of limbs, the gleam of armour, and the textures of fabric and fur.
