Nature adorning the three graces — History & Facts

At the center, three nude women stand on a stone pedestal, their bodies turned toward a large statue of a veiled female figure. One of the women gently touches the statue’s breast, while another holds a white drapery that cascades down from the statue’s shoulder. A third woman, seen from behind, leans forward, her hand resting on the pedestal as she gazes up at the statue.

Above them, a rich red drapery is held aloft by winged putti, who flutter in the upper corners and scatter flowers onto the scene below. The entire composition is framed by abundant garlands of fruit and flowers, which climb up either side and are intertwined with twisting tree trunks and foliage. To the left and right, muscular satyrs and nymphs crouch and reach among the garlands, their bodies half-shadowed in the darkened lower corners.

The light falls most strongly on the three central figures and the statue, illuminating their pale skin and the white cloth, while the surrounding figures and foliage recede into deep shadow. The palette is dominated by luminous flesh tones, creamy whites, and the vivid reds and golds of the drapery and fruit, set against a backdrop of dark greens and browns. Brushwork is visible in the soft modeling of the bodies and the textured surfaces of the fruit and leaves, with highlights carefully placed to suggest the sheen of skin and the gloss of ripe produce.

The composition is arranged in a vertical axis, with the statue and the three women forming the central focus, flanked by the lively, twisting forms of satyrs, nymphs, and putti. Small details abound, such as the delicate wings of the putti, the curling vine tendrils, and the varied shapes of apples, grapes, and gourds spilling from the garlands.
