Pierre-Edouard Baranowski — History & Facts
In the winter of 1918, Amedeo Modigliani painted his friend and fellow émigré, Pierre-Edouard Baranowski, a Polish poet and aspiring painter adrift in the bohemian circles of Montparnasse. The sitter’s identity was nearly lost to history: for decades, the portrait was known simply as “Le Polonais,” until careful research in the late 20th century matched the elongated features to Baranowski, who had sat for Modigliani during a period of illness and poverty. This painting captures not just a face, but the fleeting camaraderie and hardship shared by artists in Paris at the end of the First World War. Baranowski appears as a solitary figure, set against a muted, undefined background that offers no distraction from his introspective gaze.
His almond-shaped eyes, a hallmark of Modigliani’s style, are rendered as dark pools—one of them left hauntingly blank, perhaps suggesting an inner world closed to the viewer. The sitter’s long, narrow face and elegant neck echo the stylizations of African masks, which Modigliani admired, while the subtle tilt of the head and the set of the mouth convey a quiet melancholy. Unlike the robust realism of Soutine’s portraits from the same era, here the emphasis is on psychological distance and delicate line, inviting us to wonder at the sitter’s thoughts and fate. The journey of Pierre-Edouard Baranowski as an object is less documented than some of Modigliani’s more famous nudes, but it is typical of the artist’s late portraits, painted during his final years in Paris before his untimely death in 1920.
The work circulated among private collections before entering public view, and today it stands as a testament to Modigliani’s circle of friends and models—many of whom, like Baranowski, lived on the margins of recognition. In the context of Modigliani’s career, this portrait marks a period of intense creativity and personal struggle, when the artist’s health was failing but his vision remained undimmed. The painting now serves as both a personal memorial and a window onto the vanished world of Montparnasse.
