Saint Ildefonso of Toledo — History & Facts
A solitary figure stands upright against a turbulent, cloud-filled sky, his gaze lowered in contemplation. He wears an elaborate gold-embroidered chasuble that covers nearly his entire form, its intricate patterns rendered in swirling, textured brushstrokes. A tall, ornate mitre sits atop his head, its surface densely worked with yellow and white highlights that catch the light, echoing the gold tones of his vestments.
The figure’s right hand, gloved in white, grasps a bishop’s crosier whose gilded head rises just above his shoulder, while a green cloth drapes from the staff, adding a striking accent of color. His left hand, bare and pale, holds open a large book, its yellowed pages fanned out, suggesting a moment of reading or reflection. A white pallium, marked by black crosses, lies over his shoulders and down the front of his chest, standing out sharply against the rich reds and golds of his robe.
The background is a dark, moody blue, with swirling white and gray clouds that frame the figure and intensify the dramatic atmosphere. The paint surface is energetic and tactile, with visible brushwork that gives the fabrics and sky a sense of movement and vitality. The composition is strictly vertical, the figure dominating the canvas from top to bottom, emphasizing his solemn authority and spiritual presence.
The lower corners of the painting are filled with deep shadows, with the figure’s white garment hem sharply outlined against the dark ground. The left edge of the canvas is dominated by the vertical golden staff, which extends nearly the full height of the painting. The background sky is streaked with dramatic, diagonal brushstrokes of white and gray, with a patch of warm brownish-orange arching along the top edge.
Light falls most strongly on the figure’s face, hands, and the open pages of the book, leaving the sides of his robe and the lower part of the composition in relative darkness. El Greco painted this depiction of Saint Ildefonso of Toledo between 1605 and 1610. He is shown here with the traditional attributes of a bishop: mitre, chasuble, pallium, crosier, glove, and an open Bible.
