Christ Driving the Money Changers from the Temple — History & Facts

A dramatic scene unfolds beneath towering marble columns, where Jesus Christ stands at the center, right arm raised and holding a whip as he drives the money changers from the temple. His vivid red and blue robes set him apart from the surrounding figures, who recoil in alarm and confusion, their gestures frantic and expressive. To Christ’s right, a group of men and women twist and shield themselves, some clutching their heads or raising their arms in self-defense, while others scramble to gather scattered coins and overturned baskets.

In the foreground, a woman in a pink and blue gown sits on the steps, her hand pressed to her chest, beside a toppled cage and spilled doves, emphasizing the chaos of the moment. The architectural setting is grand and classical, with soaring columns and deep arches framing a view of distant buildings and a sky streaked with clouds and golden light. Light falls dramatically across the scene, illuminating Christ and the figures closest to him, while casting deeper shadows in the recesses of the temple.

The color palette is dominated by rich blues, reds, and ochres, with El Greco’s brushwork lending a sense of fluidity and urgency to the drapery and flesh. Distinctive elongated forms and expressive faces reflect the artist’s Mannerist style, with figures arranged in a dense, almost theatrical composition that draws the viewer into the tumult. In the lower right corner, a group of four men with somber expressions stand together, their dark clothing and faces partly shadowed.

At the far right edge, two small children or cherubs are visible, one crawling on the ground and the other reaching toward a scattered object. In the left background, a man in a blue hat bends over a table, his hands busy among coins and papers. The checkerboard floor tiles recede into the distance, leading the eye toward a shadowy doorway beneath a large arch at the back of the temple. Christ Driving the Money Changers from the Temple was painted by El Greco in 1570, depicting the biblical episode known as the Cleansing of the Temple.
