The Disrobing of Christ — History & Facts
A crowd of figures presses tightly around the central figure of Jesus Christ, who stands serenely in a vivid red robe, his eyes lifted upward and his right hand raised to his chest. A thick rope encircles Christ’s wrists, held taut by a muscular man in green at his left, who grips the garment and appears ready to strip it away. To Christ’s immediate right, a man in yellow bends over a wooden cross, drilling a hole in preparation for the crucifixion, his body twisted as he works intently.
Three women cluster at the lower left, their faces marked by sorrow; one in blue and another in yellow look on in distress, while a third, veiled in white, stands behind them. Behind Christ, a dense throng of men jostles for space, their faces animated with argument and accusation; one figure in black at the upper right points accusingly toward Christ. Spears, halberds, and banners rise in a jagged thicket above the crowd, set against a sky streaked with blue and white, amplifying the sense of chaos and tension.
The composition is vertically stacked, with figures crowded into the foreground and little depth behind, creating a sense of oppression and immediacy. The brushwork is energetic and visible, especially in the folds of Christ’s robe and the textured faces of the executioners, while the colors are intense and contrasting: the red of Christ’s garment dominates, set off by flashes of yellow, green, blue, and metallic silver. Light falls most strongly on Christ’s face and robe, making him the luminous center of the scene, while the surrounding figures are cast in deeper shadow. The painting is known as The Disrobing of Christ or El Espolio, created by El Greco between 1577 and 1579 for the High Altar of the sacristy of the Cathedral of Toledo.
