El Greco

Greek, 1541–1614

El Greco trained as a master in the Post-Byzantine tradition in Crete before moving to Venice and then Rome, where he incorporated elements of Mannerism and the Venetian Renaissance into his work. Born Doménikos Theotokópoulos in 1541 in the Kingdom of Candia (now Crete), he later settled in Toledo, Spain, where he produced his most recognized paintings and worked as a painter, sculptor, and architect. El Greco signed his works with his Greek name, often adding "Cretan," and was known for elongated figures and vivid, imaginative color. His dramatic style influenced later artists and inspired writers, and he died in Toledo in 1614.
