Summer Evening on Skagen's Southern Beach — History & Facts

Two women in white dresses stand on the sandy shore at the edge of the sea in Summer Evening on Skagen's Southern Beach, painted by Peder Severin Krøyer in 1893. The figures are positioned near the left side of the canvas, facing the water, with their backs mostly turned to the viewer. The beach curves gently into the distance, and the calm sea meets a blue sky tinged with the last light of day.

Soft, cool tones of blue, violet, and pale yellow dominate the painting, with the artist using loose, blended brushwork to capture the subtle effects of evening light on sand and water. Peder Severin Krøyer was a leading member of the Skagen Painters, a group of Scandinavian artists active in the late nineteenth century who were known for their depictions of the northern Danish coast and its unique light. Paintings of leisure and social life on the beaches of Skagen were a hallmark of Krøyer’s work during this period. Summer Evening on Skagen's Southern Beach was painted in 1893, a time when the artist was at the height of his career and frequently explored themes of companionship, light, and the landscape of Skagen.

The painting is in the Skagens Museum in Skagen.
