The Burning of the Houses of Lords and Commons — History & Facts

A torrent of golden fire bursts from the left side of the canvas, engulfing the Palace of Westminster in a sweeping blaze that lights up the night sky. The flames erupt upward and outward, scattering sparks and embers into swirling clouds of smoke that drift across the center of the scene. Two towers, silhouetted against the inferno, rise above the burning buildings, their forms partially obscured by the thick haze.

The River Thames stretches across the foreground, its surface shimmering with reflections of the fire and the deep shadows of night. Boats crowd the river, their dark shapes clustered together as figures gather to watch the spectacle or escape the danger. At the lower left, a dense throng of onlookers stands along the riverbank, their faces turned toward the blaze, rendered in loose, almost abstract strokes.

To the right, Westminster Bridge dominates the composition, its arches and balustrades picked out in pale, luminous tones that contrast with the fiery glow to the left. Small points of light dot the bridge, suggesting lamps or torches held by the crowds lining its length. The sky above shifts from the intense yellows and oranges of the fire to smoky violets and deep blue, with scattered flecks of paint evoking falling debris or distant stars.

Turner's brushwork is energetic and expressive, with thick, textured strokes in the flames and more delicate, misty handling in the smoke and water. The composition sweeps dramatically from the concentrated chaos of the burning parliament on the left to the relative calm and solidity of the bridge on the right, guiding the gaze across the unfolding disaster. Every area of the canvas pulses with movement, from the flickering fire to the restless crowd and the rippling water. The subject is a cityscape in London, showing the conflagration as it spreads through the historic seat of Parliament, with Westminster Bridge and the Thames as key landmarks.
