The Good Samaritan — History & Facts

While the wounded Jewish man is being lifted from his horse, the Samaritan who rescued him is arranging his lodging with the innkeeper in the door opening. The scene is extremely finely etched and worked out pictorially with rich tonal gradations. Not coincidentally, for this print Rembrandt made a preparatory oil sketch in which, incidentally, the indecorous dog in the foreground is absent.
