The Virgin and Child with the Young Saint John the Baptist — History & Facts
A tender embrace unfolds at the center, as the Christ Child reaches up to press his cheek against the Virgin Mary's face. Mary sits in profile, her head gently inclined toward her son, her eyes downcast and lips softly pursed in a moment of quiet affection. She is draped in a robe of deep blue and green, edged with gold, with a transparent veil falling over her hair and shoulders, its delicate border rendered in fine, precise brushwork.
The Christ Child, nude except for a translucent veil, stands on Mary's lap, his small arm encircling her neck and his gaze turned upward, meeting her serene expression. To the left, the young Saint John the Baptist kneels, his hands clasped in prayer and his head turned toward the holy pair, his long, curling hair framing a face filled with devotion. A stone arch opens onto a pale blue sky, lending depth to the composition and framing the figures in a luminous space.
Light falls evenly across the scene, illuminating the soft modeling of flesh and the subtle folds of fabric, while the halos of the Virgin and Child are picked out in shimmering gold. The composition draws the three figures into a close, intimate group, their gestures and glances connecting them in a silent conversation. Every surface, from the smooth skin of the children to the intricate gold embroidery on Mary's sleeve, is rendered with meticulous care, revealing the artist's command of tempera and line.
A slender gold cross, held by the young Saint John, rises diagonally behind him and catches the light against the blue sky beyond the arch. The Virgin's veil casts a faint shadow on her forehead, and the folds of her blue mantle are accentuated by subtle gradations of light and dark blue. The background is largely filled with a pale, cloudless sky, framed by the dark stone arch that curves along the upper left edge of the painting.
Fine, linear brushstrokes define the contours of the figures' hair, with individual curls and strands rendered in delicate detail, especially in the young Saint John's reddish locks.
