Windsor from Lower Hope — History & Facts
A broad sweep of riverbank and meadow stretches across the foreground, its pale ochre grasses interrupted by a dark band of water reflecting the sky above. Clusters of trees rise in shadowy masses along the middle ground, their foliage rendered in deep greens and browns, anchoring the composition at either side. To the left, small red-roofed buildings and scattered livestock dot the open field, adding touches of colour and life to the landscape.
The sky occupies more than half the canvas, filled with dramatic, sweeping clouds painted in broad, energetic strokes of grey, white, and violet. A patch of bright blue sky breaks through the cloud cover near the centre, illuminating the scene with a fleeting, silvery light that falls unevenly across the land. Brushwork varies from soft, blended passages in the clouds to sharper, more textured marks in the trees and foreground, giving the surface a sense of movement and immediacy.
The composition is arranged in horizontal bands, with the reflective water at the bottom, the golden field and trees in the centre, and the vast, changeable sky above. Details such as the faint reflections in the water and the delicate transitions of colour in the clouds reward close inspection, revealing the artist’s careful observation of atmosphere and light. A dark, silhouetted structure with multiple turrets stretches across the horizon near the centre, partially obscured by trees.
In the lower left corner, rough, vertical brushstrokes suggest reeds or tall grasses at the river’s edge. The far right edge of the painting is dominated by a dense cluster of dark trees, creating a strong vertical accent. Light falls most brightly on the central band of meadow, while the corners and edges are shrouded in shadow.
The paint in the sky is applied in sweeping, loose strokes, with subtle gradations of grey, lavender, and cream blending into one another. Windsor from Lower Hope was painted by Joseph Mallord William Turner in 1805.
